Ukraine war: US says Iran now Russia’s ‘top military backer’

According to the US, Russia and Iran have a relationship that has evolved into a full-fledged defense partnership.

John Kirby, spokesperson for the US national security council, said that Russia provides unprecedented levels of military support.

He adds that reports have surfaced in the US that both countries are looking at joint production of deadly drones.

This is after Ukraine had accused Iran of providing Russia with “kamikaze” drones that were used in the deadly attack on 17 October. Tehran initially denied this accusation.

Later, the Middle Eastern country admitted to sending Moscow limited numbers of drones “many months before” the war.

Responding, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, said that this was a fabrication and that more Iranian drones were being employed.

According to the Ukrainian air force, 10 of 15 drones that were used in attacks on southern regions were shot down.

According to Mr Zelensky, more than 1.5 million people were without electricity in Odesa due to the strikes. He also stated that it could take several days before electricity is restored.

Australia had earlier announced that it would sanction three Iranians and one Iranian company for providing drones to Russia for use against Ukraine.

On Friday, Kirby stated that Iran and Russia would not be able to create drones together, which would be detrimental to Ukraine, Iran’s neighbors, and the international community.

He stated that Russia is looking to work with Iran in areas such as weapons development and training. The US also fears that Russia might “provide Iran advanced military components”, including helicopters and air defense systems.

He stated that Iran has been Russia’s most important military supporter …”. “Russia has been using Iranian drones in strike on energy infrastructure, denying millions of Ukrainians power, heat, and critical services. Iran’s actions are causing the deaths of thousands of people in Ukraine.

Responding to the comments of Mr Kirby, James Cleverly, UK Foreign Secretary, stated that Iran had become Russia’s primary military supporter and that their relationship was threatening global security.

He said that Iran has sent hundreds of drones to Russia as a result of the “sordid” deals between them.

He said that Russia was offering technical and military support to Iran in return. This will increase the Iranian regime’s risk to international security and our partners in Middle East.

He stated that the UK had agreed to Iran’s support in the future as Russia tries to obtain more weapons including hundreds of missiles.

Penny Wong (Australia’s foreign minister) stated that the supply of drones to Russia was evidence of Iran’s role in destabilizing global security. This list highlights the fact that anyone who provides material support for Russia will be punished.

Following the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in custody earlier this month, she announced that 19 others and two entities would be subject to harsh treatment for anti-government protesters.
