A group of GOP Wyoming lawmakers wants to ban electric vehicle sales in Wyoming by 2035. They claim that this will protect the oil and gas industry.

Six state legislators sponsored the measure that was introduced to the state legislature Friday. They stated in it that electric cars will limit Wyoming’s ability trade with other states. The bill says that both citizens and businesses would be advised to avoid electric vehicles until the ban takes effect.

The bill states that “the proliferation of electric vehicles at Wyoming’s expense will have deleterious effects on Wyoming’s communities, and will be detrimental Wyoming’s economy as well as the country’s ability to efficiently engage in trade.”

According to the legislation, adding power charging stations to power electric vehicles would require large amounts of power in order for them “to sustain their misadventure.”

The bill also stated that thousands of people have been employed by the state’s oil industry.

In the meantime, fifteen other states, including New York, have also moved to ban sales of gas-powered vehicles. The bill’s last clause instructs Wyoming’s secretary-of-state to send a copy to the California governor. He has supported the ban on gasoline-powered vehicles in his state throughout his governorship.
