Biden to veto GOP bill protecting women’s sports, calls it ‘discrimination’ against transgender students
The White House announced Monday that Biden would veto any bill that prevents biological males from taking part in women’s sport if it passes both houses of Congress.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act (H.R. Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) introduced H.R. 734. It is expected that the House will vote on it sometime this week.
The Administration is strongly opposed to the passage by the House of H.R. The White House issued a press release. For students across the country, being a part of a sports team and participating in sport is an important way to grow up, stay engaged in school and learn leadership and life skills. H.R. H.R.
Schools, coaches and athletic associations across the country have already worked with families to create participation rules that are fair, that consider particular sports, grade level, and levels or competition. H.R. 734 is a nationwide ban that doesn’t take into account competitiveness or grade levels. “H.R. 734 discriminates against people because of who they are,” the report said.
The statement claimed that politicians were dictating “one size fits all” requirements, forcing coaches to remove children from their teams. It also claimed transgender youths across the country already faced a mental crisis.
The government claimed that such a law is “unnecessary” and “hurts students and families.”
“Discrimination is not allowed in our schools or on our sports fields.” Instead of addressing the pressing issues that families and students face today–such as raising teacher pay, keeping guns out of schools, addressing the mental health crisis our youth face, and helping students learn and recover academically from unprecedented disruptions–Congressional Republicans have instead chosen to prioritize policies that discriminate against children,” the White House said.

Steube’s bill would prohibit educational institutions receiving Title IX funds from the federal government from allowing “a person of a male sex to participate in an activity or athletic program that is intended for women or girls”.
The bill states that the sex a person is would only be determined by their “reproductive biological and genetics” at birth. However, it would only allow transgender women to train or participate in girls’ athletic programs if there are no biological female athletes who would lose a spot on a team.
The Democrats have stated that they will be opposing the bill in the House. House Education and Workforce Committee passed the bill 25-17 – all Republicans voted in favor and only Democrats opposed it.
