In Bronx rally, Trump says Biden policies have ‘slaughtered’ Black and Hispanic Americans
Former President Donald Trump went into hostile political terrain Thursday in the South Bronx, telling voters that President Biden has been the worst president for people of color.
Mr. Trump claimed that the Biden administration was responsible for policies which have led to inflation, crime increases and illegal immigration. He said that these problems are most severe in impoverished areas.
Mr. Trump stated that “African Americans and Hispanic Americans were being slaughtered.” “These millions of people who are coming into our nation — the most negative impact is on our Black and Hispanic populations, who are losing jobs, housing, and everything else they can lose.”
The Bronx, one of America’s most diverse communities and New York City’s poorest borough, provided the perfect backdrop for Trump’s message.
Trump drew applause for his statement, “On Day One we will replace Bidenomics with MAGAnomics.” “The moment Joe Biden leaves, I’ll quickly rebuild the greatest economy ever seen in history.”
Mr. Trump claimed that everyone was better off financially when he was president.
According to a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, Mr. Trump’s star power was evident as 25,000 people attended the event.
Democrats ridiculed the notion that Mr. Trump is a huge Bronx fan.
Ritchie Torres said on social media that Donald Trump’s rally was in the South Bronx, but not THE South Bronx. “To put it bluntly, Trump transplants in the South Bronx are whiter than locals, who are almost exclusively Latino and Black.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said that the visit was made solely for political convenience. She said that he was not doing this in the South Bronx to make a statement, but rather because he had court. “The man has the legal equivalent of an anklet around him,” she added before the rally.
Since mid-April, the event that took place during a break in Mr. Trump’s criminal trial for hush money has trapped him inside a New York Courtroom four days per week.
The case forced Mr. Trump, who was campaigning in battleground states, to switch to the Big Apple.
He visited a Harlem bodegas, interacted with union workers on a construction site, and dropped off pizzas at a Midtown Manhattan fire station to pose for pictures with first responders.
New York is reliably a Democrat state in presidential elections.
In 1984, President Reagan won a 49-state landslide over Democratic nominee Walter Mondale.
In contrast, Mr. Trump lost New York in 2016 and 2020 by more than 20 points to Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
He has still promoted the idea “we will win New York.”
Analysts say that the visit by Mr. Trump to the South Bronx, as well as his campaigning in New York, is a way for him to send a message to Black and Hispanic Americans who live in battleground states that he needs their support and that Mr. Biden does not deserve it anymore.
The visit may also help to soften his image among suburban voters.
Mr. Biden won the 2020 elections with the help of women, young voters, and people of colour, re-creating the Obama coalition which has fueled Democrats in recent years.
The polls show that Mr. Biden’s support among Black and Hispanic voters is declining.
Mr. Trump said that his hometown is a shell of what it used to be. He pledged to restore its glory if he were elected president.
He said New York City was once a “testament of the American spirit and American dream,” but that “sadly, this is now an ailing city.”
He said that homelessness had reached crisis levels, criminals were running amok, and “mobs” of migrants were fighting police officers, giving America the finger.
Trump stated, “The simple truth is Joe Biden does not get the job finished for the Bronx. He doesn’t get the job completed for New York. And he certainly isn’t getting the work done for America.” He is incompetent. “He is incompetent.”
Mr. Trump pledged to “make New York City Great again.”
He said: “Remember, if New Yorkers can’t save the country — nobody can.”
