Florida Republicans tout 1 million-voter edge over Dems after years of stunning growth

Sunshine State Republicans have surpassed a major milestone and now boast a voter registration advantage of 1 million over Democrats.

The GOP’s announcement on Sunday is the culmination of a remarkable transformation in a state that was once a quintessential “battleground” where Democrats had long been the dominant party.

Evan Power, the Florida GOP chairman, said in a press release that “our success goes beyond numbers.” “It is about a vision of making Florida the beacon for freedom in the rest of the nation,” Power said.

According to the Florida Division of Elections, Democrats registered more than 250.000 more voters in 2018 than Republicans.

In late 2021, the registered Republicans will surpass them due to the growth of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the FDE, as recently as 2018, Republicans accounted for 5.26 million voters compared to 4.3 million Democrats. In Florida, there are 13,4 million registered voters.

Republicans in the entire state celebrated the milestone on Sunday.

Florida Governor: “Six Years Ago, Registered Democrats Outnumbered Registered Republicans By Nearly 300,000 — And Florida Never Had More Democrats Than Republicans In Its History” Ron DeSantis posted on X.

“Now, Republicans are outnumbering Democrats by one million voters. This is a sea-change that few thought was possible (and contrary of the many predictions that FL will become a blue State). Leadership is important. “Bold colors, not pastels”

DeSantis won the race for governor in 2018 by a slim margin of 49.6% against 49.2%. He then easily won his 2022 reelection bid with a 59.4%-to-40% margin, surpassing Republicans nationwide that year, who did not perform as expected.

The Florida GOP attributed its success in voter registration to the major Republicans of the state, including DeSantis and Ashley Moody, Attorney General.

Florida Democrats are optimistic about their chances to win in the Sunshine State, despite the crushing defeat of 2022.

They have poured money into the campaign of former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel Powell (D-Fla. ), who is running against Sen. Rick Scott. Before he dropped out, Biden said he could have won in Florida.

According to a White House transcription, Biden stated that “here in Florida, we’ve all had a good dose of Trump-ism” during a January fundraiser.

“We must organize and mobilize the votes. I believe we can win Florida. “I think Democrats can win Florida.”

Biden, who is 81 years old, lost Florida in 2020 to the former president Donald Trump, 47.9% to 52.2%. Former President Barack Obama was the last Democrat who won Florida in 2012.

Abortion is one of the topics Democrats hope will be a boon in Florida. It is on the ballot in a referendum for the November 5 election.

The state will vote on whether to include abortion rights in its constitution, and override a state ban that prohibits the procedure for women after six weeks gestation. However, there are a few exceptions.

For the referendum to be successful, 60% of voters must vote. In other red states, such as Ohio and Kansas, voters have come out in large numbers to support abortion rights.
