David Hogg is a Parkland High School student who survived the shooting in 2018. He has become a national activist against violence. David Hogg is now running for the leadership of the Democratic National Committee.

Hogg, 24, announced on Monday that he will run to become the vice chair of DNC. He said he would be focusing his efforts on bringing back the young voters who had drifted away from the Democratic Party and towards the Republicans. According to NBC News’ exit polling, the shift in support for Donald Trump was abrupt and profound. In November, young voters, who favored President Joe Biden four years earlier, backed Donald Trump more than any other Republican presidential candidate in 2008.

Hogg, in a press release, said that “going forward we need to focus more on youth outreach across all states and territory to rebuild our coalition following the massive shift towards the right in young voters during this election.”

Hogg urges the party to look deeper within itself and assess the setbacks suffered by Democrats on November 5. Hogg criticized some members of Kamala Harris’ team and others for adopting a blasé attitude following her loss, despite warning repeatedly about the dangers Trump’s reelection would pose to democracy.

You raised a ridiculous amount of money. We lost the race we were supposed to win. It’s time to peel back the curtains and ask, “OK, what went wrong?” instead of protecting the consultants who brought us here in the first instance,” Hogg stated in an interview.

Hogg has said that he is aggressively tackling his race for the vice chair. He has already sent emails to all 448 DNC active members who will be voting in the election, and he’s quickly booking follow-up interviews.

Hogg was outraged by what he called a lack in awareness on the part of the party during the months leading up to the election. Hogg stated that he had asked the Democratic National Convention, in Chicago during August, why they weren’t doing more outreach to young men.

Hogg stated that “I received messages from different consultants telling me, ‘Here’s you again, saying stupid stuff.’ As though they knew what young people were thinking, when it is emblematic of a broader problem for the Democratic Party where we’d rather live in a fictional reality curated by a consultant.”

Hogg became a national celebrity after the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland (Florida), in which 17 people were killed. He and his classmates organized marches to demand stronger gun laws.

Hogg, along with his classmates, founded the gun-safety group March For Our Lives in the aftermath of the shooting. The group boasts that it has helped pass over 250 gun safety laws.

Hogg founded Leaders We Deserve – a group whose goal is to elect young people into local and national office.

Hogg expressed his concern that Trump’s presidency could undermine some gun safety initiatives, and that Democrats don’t take such threats seriously — especially after warning about them during the campaign.

“What kills me the most is when people go out in the party after the elections and the general feeling is: ‘Well there was nothing we could have changed.’ Let’s all put our hands in the air and go find consulting jobs with corporate America. Hogg said, “I’ll be seeing you there.”

Hogg’s announcement marks the latest in a series of activities surrounding new DNC leadership, since Jaime Harrison announced his resignation as Chair. The party is in turmoil after losing the White House to Trump, despite having outspent Trump and boasting of superior organization strength during the weeks before the election.

Forums will be held in January by the candidates for DNC Chair before the voting of committee members on February 1. DNC Chair candidates have been announced so far. They include Vice Chair Ken Martin, Minnesota Party chair Ben Wikler, former Maryland Governor. Martin O’Malley and New York State Sen. James Skoufis are the two candidates who have been announced so far as DNC chair candidates.
