LA Mayor Bass rejects FDNY’s offer to help — despite not having enough firefighters to battle blazes still raging: sources

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has denied rebuffing the FDNY’s offer to help contain the deadly fires in the area, even though California officials claim they do not have enough firefighters.

The Post reported Friday that Robert Tucker, the New York City Fire Commissioner, made a helpful overture in recent days to Bass, who is facing a lot of trouble. Five fires are raging around Los Angeles, causing at least 10 deaths and damaging thousands of homes and business.

Sources claim that JetBlue offered to pay the flight costs for city smokers from New York to Los Angeles.

Sources said that the offer was not taken up, and no orders were issued to send crews from New York City out west.

Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom thanked Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum for her assistance on Friday, while additional firefighters from Colorado New Mexico Utah and Utah arrived in California to assist Thursday.

Sources speculate that Bass might have refused to accept Bravest’s help, because fighting wildfires requires a “whole different beast,” which requires special training. This is in contrast to putting out blazes on buildings, which are typical for the FDNY.

The apparent refusal of the department still surprised some observers, given that Los Angeles Fire Chief Anthony Marrone admitted Wednesday that the firefighting forces were losing the battle to contain the blazes.

Marrone stated that “LA County, and the 29 fire departments within our county, are not prepared for such a widespread disaster.”

Bass denied these claims later.

Zach Seidl told The Post on Friday night that “this is false. We have never refused resources. LA welcomes all assistance to fight fires.”

He said that there weren’t enough firefighters to tackle four fires this large in LA County. At the time, four fires were raging.

Marrone stated that the LA County Fire Department was not prepared for four major brush fires. This is especially true given these sustained wind and low humidity.

In the middle of this week, the city acknowledged that they ran out of water while fighting the Palisades Fire on that particular day due to mismanagement and operational problems.

Bass, who was on holiday in Ghana at the time of the blazes, has been accused of cutting funding for the fire department months earlier by $18million.
