‘Assassination culture’: Liberal acceptance of political violence puts Trump, Musk in crosshairs

Rising Concerns Over Left-Wing Endorsement of Political Violence
A recent study by the Network Contagion Research Institute has highlighted a disturbing trend among liberal Americans: a growing acceptance of extreme measures, including the justification of assassinations against conservative figures such as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, a key advisor on government efficiency. The study reveals that a significant portion of the left condones not only violent rhetoric but also actual acts of violence towards these individuals.
Disturbing Findings in Liberal Attitudes
The research, conducted by the Rutgers-based institute, indicates that the normalization of political violence is alarmingly prevalent on the left. Platforms like Bluesky are becoming hotbeds for such radical sentiments, with users openly calling for violent actions against Trump and Musk. For instance, a user known as Trump Hater Dan posted threatening images of Musk next to a guillotine, while another user encouraged acts of violence akin to those committed by Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering a healthcare CEO.
The study underscores that frequent interaction on Bluesky correlates strongly with the endorsement of violence against these figures. Nearly 21% of center-left respondents viewed the assassination of President Trump as justifiable, with over 12% holding similar views regarding Elon Musk.
Real-World Consequences of Online Extremism
The rhetoric has escalated beyond online threats. There have been assassination attempts on President Trump, and numerous Tesla properties have suffered attacks, including arson and vandalism, which the FBI is investigating as acts of domestic terrorism. This weekend, large-scale protests against Musk’s governmental efficiency measures saw demonstrators in Washington brandishing fake guillotines and targeting effigies of Musk.

Moreover, the violence is not confined to the U.S. alone. In Vancouver, a Tesla car was attacked with a rock, injuring a passenger, amid a series of violent incidents targeting the brand’s facilities.
Bluesky and Reddit: Platforms of Concern
Aside from Bluesky, Reddit has also emerged as a platform where pro-assassination sentiments are shared widely. Subreddits supporting Luigi Mangione, despite his charges for first-degree murder, are gaining substantial followings, further demonstrating the troubling support for political violence among the left.
The survey, which gathered responses from 1,264 participants, shows that nearly 58% of left-leaning individuals find the destruction of Tesla dealerships somewhat acceptable. This is a stark contrast to the conservative viewpoint, which shows significantly less endorsement of violence against political figures.
Implications of Left-Wing Violence Normalization
The findings from the Network Contagion Research Institute suggest that the online echo chambers of hate and violence could soon manifest more frequently in real-world actions if left unchecked. The researchers call for immediate condemnation of these violent ideologies from political and cultural leaders to prevent further escalation.
Bluesky has yet to respond to inquiries regarding their role in facilitating this dangerous discourse. As political tensions remain high, the potential for offline violence catalyzed by online radicalization continues to be a significant concern for the safety of public figures and the general public alike.
