Donald Trump, the President-elect, endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana (R) on Monday morning. Johnson had been left in the wind for eleven days.

Trump posted on Truth Social a 232 word soliloquy praising his electoral victory and criticizing Democrats for weaponizing government against him.

He endorsed Johnson as speaker at the end of his speech, using boilerplate language.

Let’s not blow this great opportunity that we have been given. The American people NEED IMMEDIATE RELIEF from the destructive policies of last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson, a hard-working, religious man, is a good person. We will continue to win because he will do what is right. Mike has my complete & total endorsement. MAGA!! !

Johnson was left in the lurch after Trump abandoned him on December 19, when Johnson refused to fulfill Trump’s request to raise the debt ceiling, as part of an agreement to increase government spending. Trump’s commitment towards Johnson was questioned by reports that Trump yelled at Johnson from Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s silence when criticism of Johnson grew.

Johnson’s only hope of survival is Trump’s support. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-KY has pledged to not vote for Johnson. Johnson could lose only one additional vote and still keep his gavel.

Trump’s support might not be enough to save him. Johnson has been criticized by other Republicans who have occasionally bucked Trump in the past, such as on the 19th of December vote to fund government and raise debt ceiling.

Johnson was quick in praising Trump’s support, reiterating Trump’s message about the need to get started as soon as possible in January.

The vote for January 3, 2025 will be a vote by roll call. To certify the results of the elections on January 6, 2025, a speaker must be selected by both houses.
