Patel Pick Draws Fire From Democrats, Some Republicans
The selection of Kash patel by Donald Trump as FBI Director has angered Democrats and Republicans.
Trump announced his nomination on Truth Social Saturday night, eliciting responses from politicians of all stripes, from vehement opposition to a mild skepticism.
On Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told NBC News he had received bomb threats over Thanksgiving and was “concerned that” Patel only protect Republicans.
Senator Dick Durbin expressed skepticism, as did the majority whip of the Senate. Durbin, according to CBS News in a letter, urged his co-workers to reject Patel.

Durbin wrote that “we already have a FBI Director” and added that the president-elect wanted to “replace [his] own appointee by an unqualified loyalty”. Trump had appointed FBI Director Christopher Wray in his first term as office.
Durbin wrote that “the Senate should reject this unprecedented attempt to weaponize FBI in order to carry out the campaign of revenge that Donald Trump promised.”
Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) told ABC News “This Week” he had no complaints about Wray, and that Trump “picked an excellent man to be director of the FBI in his first term.”
“The President has the right of nomination, but these are normally for a 10 year term.” We’ll watch to see how he goes about it and if he makes the nomination.
“And if he doesn’t, just like with anyone who has been nominated to one of these posts, once they have been nominated, then the President gets, you understand, the benefit-of-the doubt for the nomination.” “But we still have to go through the process. This process includes advice, consent and sometimes advice or consent for the Senate,” he said.
John Bolton, the former national security advisor to Trump, compared Patel with Lavrentiy Bieria, head of the secret police under Soviet leader Josef Stalin, on CNN.
“Trump nominated Kash Beria to be his Lavrentiy Bieria. Fortunately, the FBI does not operate like the NKVD (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs). Bolton stated that the Senate should reject this nominee 100-0.
Vice President elect J.D. Vance wrote in response to Bolton’s comment on X: “John Bolton is wrong about everything, so Kash must be pretty amazing.”
