Sen. Marco Rubio: Immigration bill does not have votes to pass

Sen. Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the immigration reform bill he is helping to usher through Congress does not have the votes to pass the Senate — for now.

Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican, said the biggest hurdle in the push to fix the nation’s broken immigration system is “how little confidence people have that the federal government will enforce the law.”

“In essence, what people say to us is: ‘We know we have to reform the legal immigration system. We know we have to deal with the 11 million people that are here illegally, but we are only willing to do that if we can make sure that this never, ever, happens again,’” Mr. Rubio said on “Fox & Friends.” “We don’t want to be back here in another two years, five years, 10 years, dealing with another 5 or 10 million illegal immigrants.”

Asked directly whether the proposal that the immigration bill that recently passed the Senate Judiciary Committee has the votes to pass the Senate, Mr. Rubio said, “No.”
