Shock and awe: ICE sweeps up record number of illegals in U.S.

The President’s strategy of shock and awe has led to an increase in arrests for immigration in the interior. On Sunday, the deportation team reported that it had made more than 1,000 arrests, bringing the total in four days to almost 2,400.

The arrests included dozens of gangsters, including migrants linked to Tren de Aragua – the Venezuelan gang which has been infiltrating the U.S. for the last three years. Trump has declared it an enemy militia.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced other targets last week, including a convicted killer, drunken drivers who are habitual, drug dealers, and migrants accused of sex crime.

ICE announced on Sunday that “enhanced target operations” had been launched in Chicago.

The Army’s 101st Airborne Division also announced that they were mobilizing troops from the military police battalion in order to assist with what President Trump called an “invasion of illegal immigrants”.

Pentagon officials said that the additional military personnel would help Border Patrol to detect illegal border crossings.

Militaries are using planes to return migrants to their countries of origin from the border.

In a diplomatic dispute on Sunday, Colombia denied two flights and called their conduct undignified. Trump responded quickly by threatening to impose crippling tariffs and travel restrictions for Colombian leaders.

The Colombian president Gustavo Petro offered to send his presidential plane to pick up deported Colombians in the U.S., insisting that he wanted to make sure the process was “dignified”.

All-hands-on deck pays off

According to statistics shared by Senators during last week’s debate over the confirmation of Kristi Noem, Homeland Security Secretary, the number of illegal border crossings has dropped 35% in the first three months of the Trump Administration compared to the last three months of President Biden.

The officials in Pima County announced on Thursday that two migrant housing facilities would be closed because since the election of Donald Trump, no illegal immigrants have been arrested and released back into the community. The officials said that keeping the shelters as a backup plan would be expensive.

The Department of Homeland Security has celebrated its early successes.

In an email sent to journalists, the department stated that “Promises were made and promises kept.” “President Trump has already secured our border and is deporting criminals.”

Tom Homan is Mr. Trump’s border chief. He told ABC’s Sunday “This Week” that the move was intended to send the message that the Biden era of leniency towards illegal border-crossers has ended.

He said, “If you don’t show that there are consequences, then you will never be able to fix the problem of the border.”

A more aggressive message about arrests is part of the overall message.

ICE’s social media account on platform X began posting a daily activity tally.

Agents and officers arrested 538 people on Thursday, followed by 593 arrests on Friday, then 286 arrests on Saturday, and finally 956 arrests on Sunday.

ICE officers filed 1,797 “detainers” with other law-enforcement agencies. Detainers are requests that agencies notify ICE whenever a target has been released from custody, so that deportation officers may be ready to pick up the person.

Sanctuary cities are often reluctant to accept such requests.

The Newark, New Jersey mayor, who is a sanctuary, made national headlines last week after he claimed that ICE had “terrorized’ residents during the arrests of 3 illegal immigrants in a business Thursday.

Ras Baraka, the mayor of New York City, said that officers did not have a warrant to enter the back room of a business where they detained and interrogated a U.S. veteran in order to find targets for arrests.

The mayor stated that the problem was that none of them were criminals, rapists, or murderers. The mayor said that the problem was that ICE entered without a warrant.

ICE did not address the claims about the warrants but defended the officers’ handling the encounters. The statement said that officers “may ask for identification to verify an individual’s ID.”

ICE made an average of nearly 600 arrests per day during the four-day span. This is a 90% increase in pace compared to the Biden administration’s fiscal 2024.

The agency highlighted the arrests of Julio Cesar Diaz Martinez in Buffalo, New York. His charges included sex-trafficking. In Denver, Pablo Beningo Calva Deamonte was arrested for three DUIs.

According to an official of the administration, ICE arrested Cesar Augusto Polanco (59), a Dominican citizen and convicted killer, and Jose Tito Reyes (54), a Salvadoran who has a record for sex crimes.
