Southern border apprehensions plunge more than 90% from year ago in April, CBP says

Significant Decline in Illegal Border Crossings Under Trump Administration

In a striking demonstration of effective border control, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported a dramatic 93% decrease in apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border under President Donald Trump’s leadership. According to the latest figures released by the CBP, the daily average of apprehensions in April was only 279, a stark contrast to the 4,297 daily apprehensions recorded in April of the previous year. The total number of apprehensions for April this year was 8,383, down from 129,000 in the same month last year.

Enhanced Border Security and Reduced Illegal Entries

The CBP highlighted not only the reduction in apprehensions but also a significant decrease in the number of illegal aliens released into the U.S. In April, only five individuals were released, compared to 68,000 in April of the previous year. Pete Flores, the acting commissioner of CBP, credited these improvements to a strengthened security posture and increased manpower. “For the first time in years, more agents are back in the field – patrolling territories that CBP didn’t have the bandwidth or manpower to oversee just six months ago,” Flores stated. “But thanks to this administration’s dramatic shift in security posture at our border, we are now seeing operational control becoming a reality – and it’s only just beginning.”

Rise in Drug Seizures at the Border

Alongside the decrease in illegal crossings, there has been a 15% increase in drug seizures from March to April. Notably, officials confiscated nearly 800 pounds of fentanyl in April alone, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking across the border.

Historical Lows in Border Crossings

The report further details that March saw the lowest number of southwest border crossings in history, with fewer apprehensions in the entire month than there were in the first two days of March 2024 under the previous administration. In March, the Border Patrol apprehended 7,181 illegal aliens attempting to cross the southern border between ports of entry, marking a 14% decrease from February and a 95% decrease from the 137,473 aliens apprehended during the same period in 2024 under the Biden administration.

The CBP’s report sends a clear message, as stated in their findings: “Aliens are receiving the Trump administration’s message: if you cross the border illegally, you will be deported.” This reflects the administration’s firm stance on enforcing immigration laws and securing the border, which continues to show significant results in reducing illegal immigration and enhancing national security.
