Trump won’t back down on tariffs despite widespread fears of trade war

Trump administration officials said on Sunday that the president will press forward with his plans to impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, amid growing criticism from some quarters overseas and on Capitol Hill that the move could plunge the U.S. headlong into an unwinnable trade war.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and other European officials — along with Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Congress — said the tariffs will cause far-reaching damage and the last thing the global economy needs is a trade war.

But the administration says Mr. Trump is merely following through on his tough campaign talk on trade and is predicting a negligible overall impact on U.S. consumers.

“This is an action, basically, to protect our national security and economic security,” White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“We can’t have a country that can defend itself and prosper without an aluminum and steel industry,” he said.

“But the administration says Mr. Trump is merely following through on his tough campaign talk on trade.”
If he made this part of his campaign talk/”promise” and is acting on it because he wants to keep his word, where is his campaign talk/”promise” regarding social security, medicare, veterans? Oh that does not count cause it only ends up costing the government more money and it takes that away from “pet” projects most politicians want with the money saved.

This isn’t news, We have been throwing tariffs at Chinese steel for decades and it’s done nothing. If anything this one is smaller then the ones in the past. 233% was what Obama went for and even Trump was going for 45% just last year. Once again Trump is getting headlines for things that he says but doesn’t have facts on.

We have been in a one sided trade war with most foreign countries for over half a century. Th problem is that it has been a war against US products where the US hasn’t bothered to engage the adversary. Trump is about the only one who wants to fight back & it’s high time we did so.
Trade barriers to US products have been in effect in Europe since way back in the 1950’s when I was a young GI in Hanau, Germany.
Post WWII there was a need to protect the fledgling European manufacturing base long enough to get them on their economic feet & no longer need our financial support.
Sixty years later many of those same tariffs are not only still there, but have had more tariffs added to them.
If Europe can’t get their stuff together in 60+ years they never will.
It’s well past the time to stop this free ride on the US tax payer dime.

there are 1400 different duties charged by the US government, there are no free rides once you go digging. I can find no less the 7 different tariffs on Chinese steel. If you have a few hours to waste do some digging. The information is buried pretty deep but it’s out there. We give as good as we get in this trade war.

You hit the nail on the head. The only past president that even tried to fight back with Europe was Regan. All the others since Truman’s time just rolled over many making atrocious trade agreements and treaties which totally gave the other countries the benefits. The socialist countries that have the lowest labor costs plus usually government subsidies are the winners. The only way to push for a level trading field is to do as Trump is doing. The best way to stop product dumping is to get agreements between countries but those that currently have the upper hand are not likely to agree. I suppose instead of tariffs we could establish volume quotas. But then Customs needs to get involved and be beefed up. Don’t forget China actually operates several of our major port operations thanks to Bill Clinton.
