BRUSSEL, BELGIUM – NOVEMBER 24: British Prime Minister Theresa May arrives at the European Council to meet with European Council President Donald Tusk the day before a summit of the European Council on Brexit on November 24, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium. Leaders of the 27 remaining member states of the European Union are scheduled to meet tomorrow in Brussels over whether to approve the United Kingdom’s withdrawal agreement for leaving the European Union and the political declaration that will set the course for the U.K.’s relationship with the E.U. once Brexit is complete. Britain’s Parliament voted Wednesday against a no-deal Brexit, which would have allowed the nation to leave the European Union without an agreement on how to handle it on the current deadline of March 29. Prime Minister Theresa May said Parliament will vote Thursday on whether to delay Brexit past March 29.
May said there was a “clear majority” against a no-deal Brexit but the “legal default” was that Britain would leave without a deal on March 29 if no deal is reached, BBC News reports. Leaving the EU without a deal would likely be chaotic and cause major disruptions not just in the U.K. but across the remaining 27 EU member countries.
On Thursday, Parliament will be asked if they want to delay Brexit until June 30. But that is only if MPs back May’s deal by March 20.
The lawmakers’ 321-278 vote Wednesday has political but not legal force, and does not entirely rule out a chaotic no-deal departure for Britain. But it might ease jitters spreading across the EU after lawmakers resoundingly rejected May’s divorce deal on Tuesday.
