Putin Announces Ukraine Ceasefire May 8-10

Russian President Putin Declares Three-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8th to 10th, citing “humanitarian reasons.” The Kremlin has expressed its expectation for Ukraine to adhere to the ceasefire and warned of a robust response should there be any breaches.
“Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations of the truce by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response,” stated the Kremlin.
US President Trump’s Reaction to Ongoing Conflict
The announcement follows a critique from US President Donald Trump, who voiced his displeasure on social media regarding Russian military actions. “I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying,” Trump posted.
The ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day on May 9th, commemorating the end of the Second World War, potentially signaling a strategic pause during this significant national holiday.

This ceasefire appears as part of Moscow’s broader attempt to regain favor with President Trump, who recently expressed his disappointment over Russia’s continued bombings in civilian areas of Ukraine. Trump also mentioned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is prepared to concede Crimea in a potential peace agreement with Russia.
North Korea’s Involvement in the Ukraine Conflict
In related developments, North Korea has officially confirmed its support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict, marking the first acknowledgment of its military involvement. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated that their forces are committed to “annihilate and wipe out the Ukrainian neo-Nazi occupiers and liberate the Kursk area.”
Historical Context of Russian Ceasefires
This is not the first instance of Russia proposing a ceasefire in this prolonged conflict. Previously, in April 2025, Putin announced a unilateral Easter truce which lasted merely 30 hours amidst ongoing skirmishes, casting doubt on its effectiveness. However, the upcoming May ceasefire has been announced with more notice and is set to last longer, raising hopes for a temporary reprieve in the fighting.
