Zelensky Backtracks After Missteps With Trump

These remarks follow Trump’s expulsion of him from the White House just last week.
After his disastrous meeting last week with Vice President JDVance and President Donald Trump at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky changed his tone on Tuesday in regards to Russia’s war against his country.
Zelensky wrote on X: “I want to reaffirm Ukraine’s commitment towards peace.” “None among us would like to see a war that never ends. Ukraine is prepared to negotiate as soon as it can to bring peace to Ukraine.
“Nobody wants the peace more than Ukrainians,” said he. “My team is ready to work with President Trump to achieve a lasting peace.”

Trump’s comments follow his statement to the Associated Press that the end of war against Russia is “very, very distant”; a comment which elicited a strong response from Trump.
In a social media statement, Trump responded by saying that this was the worst thing Zelenskyy could have said. The United States will not tolerate it any longer.
“It’s what I said, this guy won’t be at peace as long as America is backing him. And, Europe in their meeting with Zelenskyy stated that they could not do the job without America. – Not a good statement in terms of showing strength against Russia,” continued he. “What were they thinking?”

Zelensky’s statement of Tuesday indicated that he was in favor of a ceasefire, reversing recent comments that he had made.
“We’re ready to work quickly to end the conflict, and the first stage could be the immediate release of prisoners, and a truce on the skies — a ban on long-range drones and missiles — as well as if Russia agrees to do so, a truce on the sea. “We want to be very quick in moving through the next stages, and work with the US on a solid final agreement.”
He thanked Trump and the U.S. for their support of his country.
He said, “We really appreciate what America has done for Ukraine to maintain its independence and sovereignty.” “We remember when the situation changed, when President Trump gave Ukraine Javelins. “We are grateful.”
Zelensky said he regretted the way the Oval Office meeting went on Friday, but he did not apologize publicly — something Trump’s allies claim the president would like to see.
He wrote: “Our Friday meeting at the White House in Washington did not turn out the way we had hoped.” It is unfortunate that this happened. Now is the time to put things right. “We would like to see future communication and cooperation be constructive.”
He said he would sign the deal on minerals and security between the two nations “anytime and in any format that is convenient.”
He added, “We view this agreement as an important step towards greater security and solid guarantees of security. I hope that it will be effective.”
