Biden rallies union supporters in NH

September 23, 2012

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden rallied union workers at a Teamsters union hall Saturday, saying their door-to-door efforts would be an antidote to the millions of dollars spent on advertising by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Biden told teachers, firefighters and other union members at the rally in Manchester that the middle class wouldn’t exist without organized labor and that he was counting on them to counter political advertising promoting the Republican ticket.

‘‘We’re going to be outspent by these super PACs considerably. There’s only one antidote, and the people of New Hampshire are used to this … it’s a knock on a door, it’s somebody saying ‘Look, I know what you just heard, what you just saw in that ad … I’m here to tell you, I know these guys … I vouch for them.’’’

Biden said he was glad to hear GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan talk about the struggles of the middle class but said they also should acknowledge that the policies Ryan has voted for in Congress caused those difficulties. A Romney-Ryan administration would bring more of the same, Biden said.

‘‘They’re doubling down on everything that caused the economic crisis in the first place,’’ he said.

Later in Merrimack, Biden sharpened his criticism of Romney’s ‘‘47 percent’’ comments, adding the 68,000 combat veterans in Afghanistan to the long list of people he accuses Romney of writing off.

Biden was referring to recently released video of remarks Romney made at a fundraiser in May, when he said 47 percent of Americans don’t pay federal income tax and consider themselves victims and the government obligated to take care of them.

‘‘There’s some Master Sergeant … with six or seven guys and maybe a woman up there, defending a position, being shelled all night, who, because he or she is in a combat zone risking their lives … is not paying any tax on his salary,’’ Biden said at Merrimack Middle School. ‘‘Does he view himself as a victim?

‘‘The people I know, they’ve been knocked down but they always get up,’’ Biden said. ‘‘They are full of faith and fight and determination. The last thing they think of themselves as is victims. They’re just looking for a fighting shot.’’

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said later in a statement that President Barack Obama and Biden have a disappointing record and don’t deserve another four years.

‘‘Vice President Biden today doubled down on the same false attacks and abysmal policies that have failed to turn around our economy and bring change to Washington,’’ he said.
