The first Rasmussen Reports look at Senator Chuck Schumer’s reelection run in New York finds the Democrat running well ahead of two little-known Republican opponents.
A telephone survey of Likely Voters in the Empire State finds Schumer picking up 54% support over former CIA officer Gary Berntsen who earns 35% of the vote. Five percent (5%) favor some other candidate in this race, and six percent (6%) are undecided.
Schumer also gets 54% support versus Republican strategist Jay Townsend’s 33%. Six percent (6%) prefer another candidate in this match-up, and another six percent (6%) are undecided.
Schumer is running for his third term in the Senate. The fact that the numbers in both match-ups are virtually identical suggests this race for now is all about Schumer. He easily won reelection in 2004 with 70% of the vote in the biggest landslide in the state’s senatorial election history.
No major Republican candidate is challenging Democratic incumbent Kristen Gillibrand either in the state’s special Senate election this year. Gillibrand remains far ahead of her three Republican challengers.
This statewide telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters in New York was conducted on June 16, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/-4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Schumer holds big leads among female voters in both match-ups but runs even among male voters.
The Democrat holds a modest lead over both Republicans among voters not affiliated with either major political party.
