IN: White’s 2nd-in-command resigns

March 14, 2011
Melanie D. Hayes,

Sean Keefer, second-in-command under embattled Secretary of State Charlie White, has resigned, a White spokesman confirmed today.

White faces seven felony charges alleging voter fraud in Hamilton County and would have to leave office if convicted of any of them. Officials of both parties in Indiana, including Gov. Mitch Daniels, have called for White to resign or at least temporarily step aside while the charges against him are resolved.

Keefer, who held the titles of deputy secretary of state and chief of staff in White’s office, would have taken charge if White were to step aside temporarily.

Jason Thomas, communications director in White’s office, confirmed Keefer’s resignation today.

“He turned it (a letter of resignation) in yesterday, effective yesterday,” Thomas said in a written message to a Star reporter. “A statement will be released Monday.”

White entered not guilty pleas to the charges against him in Hamilton Superior Court Friday.
