Politics mix with July 4th celebrations in Amherst, NH

(NECN: Lauren Collins, Amherst, NH) – Presidential candidates have to keep up the pace, even on a holiday.  Amherst, New Hampshire’s town green is a huge draw on the 4th of July.

“There’s always a good crowd here, though, it’s a great, great parade.  It’s always family oriented,” said  Victoria Holden who stood along the green.

Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman, often compared to each other for their Mormon faith and clean cut looks, led their supporters and said a polite hello to each other. Romney, who last week backed off his criticism that President Obama made the economy worse, said Monday that there’s “no question” the administration made the recession deeper.

“Recovery has been slower and more painful for millions of Americans because of the President’s failures.  He made the recession worse and the recovery more anemic,” said Romney.

There wasn’t a whole lot of time for politicking but there was still the chance for candidates to get the unexpected question.

Ari Garnick asked both candidates, “who would his favorite superhero be and why.”

Romney’s answer, Superman. Huntsman’s a Spiderman guy. The former Utah governor and ambassador to China says he can win New Hampshire if he campaigns the old fashioned way – one town, one hand shake at a time.

Huntsman is considered a moderate in the GOP field and most recently worked for President Obama. But he wants voters to look at the entirety of his record.

“We did health care reform in a very open and unique way based on market principals, we built an economy around tax reform,” he said.

Huntsman and Romney each had a full day of campaign stops in New Hampshire.  Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, and Rick Santorum – none of whom was in-state this independence day – had supporters march for them in the Amherst parade
