Utah GovernorÂ Gary HerbertÂ on Friday vetoed a controversial bill banning
public schools from teachingÂ contraceptionÂ as a way of
preventing pregnancy andÂ sexually transmitted diseases
saying such instruction has a place in schools.
The bill, which also sought to bar instruction on
homosexuality or other aspects of human sexuality and
backed the teaching of abstinence, would have been the
first of its kind in the nation if it had become law.
The bill , dubbed HB 363, had previously cleared
Utah’s Republican-controlled House andÂ Senate, and Herbert,
a Republican, was widely expected to sign it.
