Virtual tie, glitches give Iowa caucuses ‘black eye’

WASHINGTON – And the real winner of the 2012 Iowa caucuses is … we’ll never know.

Which means the biggest loser of the 2012 Iowa caucuses might be … the Iowa caucuses.

Thursday’s official certification of the Jan. 3 GOP presidential caucuses showed Rick Santorum with 34 more votes than the previously purported winner, Mitt Romney.

But with eight precincts unaccounted for at the Wednesday night deadline — and other lingering questions — Iowa GOP officials agreed to call it a virtual tie. On paper, the numbers are Santorum 29,839; Romney 29,805.

“Despite what had been in the media, it really was, even the night before the deadline, it really was too close to call,” Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn told The Des Moines Register.
