MADISON, Wis. — As light snow fell Tuesday on much of Wisconsin, people working to oust Republican Gov. Scott Walker delivered a small avalanche of recall petitions.

United Wisconsin, the coalition that spearheaded the effort along with Wisconsin Democrats, delivered to the Government Accountability Board petitions containing more than one million signatures aimed at recalling Walker, far more the 540,000 signatures needed, said Graeme Zielinski, spokesman for the state Democratic Party.

The effort stemmed from anger over Walker’s cost-cutting moves his first year in office, which included effectively ending collective-bargaining rights for nearly all public workers. “There is anger and bitterness everywhere,” said Jonah Lenss, who lives north of Green Bay. “(Walker) has brought out the worst in everybody.”

But Kay Bubolz of Appleton, Wis., said the petitions don’t reflect the feelings of the majority in the state. “There’s a silent majority,” she said. “I think people will be surprised.”

Zielinski said Tuesday that 845,000 signatures had also been submitted to recall Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and that more than the required signatures had been submitted to force recall elections of four Republican state senators, including Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald.

“It’s like the (Green Bay) Packers winning the division,” cautioned Tom Sieber, past chair of the Brown County Democratic Party in northeast Wisconsin. “It was a great feeling to win the division, but there’s a larger goal at hand.”
