U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann may be mulling a run for president in 2012, as her chief adviser confirmed Wednesday that such a bid is possible.
ABC News first reported that Bachmann is considering a presidential run as she heads to a fundraiser later this month in the first presidential caucus state, Iowa. The report said Bachmann will consult with GOP elders in Iowa before making a final decision.
Bachmann’s chief of staff, Andy Parrish, wouldn’t scuttle the ABC News report. He told the Times on Wednesday morning that Bachmann isn’t ruling out a presidential bid.
“It’s not off the table,†Parrish said.
When asked when Bachmann will say more about whether she’s running for president, Parrish said updates may be released “in due time.â€
Parrish said Bachmann will travel frequently in 2011 to talk about the need to defeat President Obama in 2012. But Parrish declined to say if Bachmann plans additional trips to Iowa.
On Jan. 21, Bachmann is slated to be special guest at a fundraiser for the Iowans for Tax Relief PAC in Des Moines. That event is hosted by a close Bachmann ally, Iowa Rep. Steve King, and a host of state-level Iowa leaders.
Bachmann, R-Stillwater, has become a leading national voice for the tea party movement from Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, which includes St. Cloud.
Wednesday’s news makes Bachmann the second high-profile Republican from Minnesota who may be considering challenging Obama. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty is widely believed to be considering a presidential run and has visited Iowa and other key presidential primary states in recent months.
This isn’t the first speculation that Bachmann wants to seek higher office. Bachmann also has been mentioned in recent weeks as a possible challenger to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar in 2012.
And a presidential run wouldn’t be Bachmann’s first bid for a national post.
