Boston mayor sends holiday party invite meant only for ‘electeds of color,’ dividing city councilors

Boston’s Democratic Mayor has been criticized after she sent invitations to a holiday party that was only intended for minorities city councilors.

Michelle Wu, the first Asian American Mayor of the city, had her aide Denise DosSantos send an email to announce the event.

According to The Boston Herald, the email stated: “Honorable Members: On behalf of the Mayor Michelle Wu, we cordially invite both you and your guest to attend the Electeds of Color Holiday Party.”

After it was revealed that the email had been sent to all councilors of the city, seven were White, the city leader received criticism. The invitation was only meant for the six “of color” councilors of the city.

DosSantos apologized 15 minutes after sending the email and clarified that it was intended only for minority councilors. She did not apologize, however, for the party she planned that excluded White city officials.

DosSantos wrote: “I apologized for my previous email about a Holiday Party tomorrow.” “I sent that email to everyone accidentally and I apologize for any offense or confusion it may have caused. Sorry for any confusion that this may have caused.”

Boston’s City Council responded quickly to the revelation of the holiday party.

According to the Boston Herald, outgoing White City Councilor Frank Baker called the exclusion of some members by the mayor “unfortunate” and “divisive.”

Baker, citing recent tensions in the City Council did not speculate on the reasons behind the Mayor’s decision to hold the party. However, he said that he didn’t think it was “a good move.”

He added, “It is unfortunate that the current temperature would cause us to further divide.”

Baker claimed that he did not feel personally insulted.

He said, “I don’t get offended very easily.” To offend me you will have to do more than just not invite me to the party.

Black City Councilor Brian Worrell had a different opinion. He defended the invite, saying that the holiday party is a way for Boston’s government to represent “all sorts of special groups”.

“We create space for all types of groups within the city government and in the city.” The Elected Officials Of Color have been around since more than 10 years,” Worrell said.

He stressed that DosSantos did not intend to harm anyone by sending the email.

Michael McCormack, a five-term Boston City Councilor, said that the party was not typical for the mayor’s offices and that former city leaders would invite the entire chamber.

McCormack stated, “Boston and race are unfortunately synonymous.” “I just hope it was an error.” “It’s nothing that anyone at the mayor’s desk should be proud of.”

Ricardo Patron, spokesperson for Wu, said on Wednesday that the Electeds of Color had asked Mayor Wu to host the annual celebration. He said that the party was only one of many events happening during the season.

Wu plans to host a holiday celebration for all cabinet ministers, city councilors, and members of the legislature in the next few days.

Fox News Digital’s comment request to the Boston Mayor’s Office was not returned.
