Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – A man suspected of threatening the staff of Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) appeared in court on Monday as lawmakers grappled with heightened security concerns caused by the shooting in Arizona over the weekend.
John Troy Davis, 44, is charged with assault on a federal employee. He is accused of repeatedly calling the office of Bennet regarding a hearing about his Social Security Benefits. During the calls, he allegedly warned he is schizophrenic, and threatened to “shoot people†and “set fire to the perimeter.â€
The last call was made on Thursday, a day before he was arrested and two days before a gunman opened fire on a gathering at a supermarket in neighboring Arizona, killing six people and seriously wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ).
Giffords, who remains in critical condition in a hospital, was meeting with constituents at the time. Two of her aides were killed in the tragedy, as well as a federal judge and a nine-year old girl who had recently been elected to the student council.
The shooting prompted Congress to suspend legislative work on its opening day of the new session and the White House to lead a moment of silence, which spanned beyond the nation in the International Space Station, where Giffords’ brother-in-law is stationed as commander.
The two incidents are believed to be unrelated but they point to the increasing threats against lawmakers in recent years and the harsh and vitriolic tone of public debate that has accompanied it.
The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement it advised members of Congress to “take reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal safety and security.â€
