‘Corporate Kingdom comes to an end:’ Florida Gov. DeSantis eliminates Disney control over special district
As Florida’s Governor, control over Disney’s special area was transferred to them. Ron DeSantis signed legislation renaming and rebuilding Reedy Creek.
During a Monday news conference at Reedy Creek Fire Station No. No. 9, the governor signed HB-9B. 4. The bill was passed during a special session of the legislature last month. It gives DeSantis the full power to appoint five members to the Board of Supervisors of the district and to change its name to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.
“Since 1960s. They have enjoyed special privileges that no other company or individual in Florida has ever had. They have their own government in Central Florida. They were exempted from the laws everyone else had to obey, which allowed them to receive huge benefits without having to pay their fair share of taxes. “They even managed to accumulate $700 million in municipal debt,” said the governor.
After Disney opposed the Parental Rights in Education Bill, which prohibits instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade, and any lessons that are deemed inappropriate for children aged three to five years old, the Disney district takeover was initiated. DeSantis attempted to punish the company by directing lawmakers in April to dissolve the district. This began a closely monitored restructuring process.
The governor stated that the reason the governor decided to end the self-governing state was not solely due to the company’s opposition to the bill.
“It was only mild irritation. After the dust settled, we realized that there was clearly a movement within the corporation that wanted to inject sexuality into programming for young children. DeSantis stated that.
The new law will also end Disney’s self-governing status. It will also end Disney’s exemptions from Florida’s building code and Florida fire prevention codes. Disney’s exemptions from regulatory and state reviews and approvals, ensure Disney pays “its fair part of taxes” and prevent the situation raising local taxes.
“This bill will also impose Florida laws on this area, much like it was imposed on Universal Studios and SeaWorld. DeSantis stated that this bill and the structure that we have created in it will ensure that any municipal debts that have been racked-up will be paid by Disney and not Florida taxpayers. This is how accountability looks like. This is how standing up for Florida taxpayers under the rule of the law looks, and I’m very happy that the legislature was capable of doing this.
The bill gave the governor the power to appoint five members of the Board of Supervisors. The following were named by DeSantis:
Martin Garcia, Chair of the Board
Bridget Ziegler is a Sarasota County School Board member, co-founder and former codirector of Moms for Liberty.
Clearwater attorney Brian Aungst Jr.
Mike Sasso is an attorney in Seminole County
Ron Peri, Chairman and CEO of The Gathering USA
“The new sheriff is Florida. You know what? I have a lot of things on my plate. You know, I cannot run this, you can see it from the governor’s. He said that the state control board was being created to govern this area.
The district will be renamed and continue to have broad authority to levy property taxes and oversee roads, water and sewer systems, parking lots, fire departments, and issue bonds to finance projects.
