Illinois Board of Education to Use Nearly $20 Million in Federal Grants on Electric School Buses

Board of Education officials announced that several Illinois school districts would receive millions of dollars in federal grants to purchase electric buses to replace those powered by gas.

Illinois State Board of Education announced on December 19, that they had received a grant of $19.9 Million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program (CHDV) distributes more than 400 million dollars to communities in the United States that are “non-attainment with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards” (NAAQS).

The ISBE announced that nearly $20 million would be distributed to nine Illinois districts to replace traditional school buses with electric buses “zero emission”. It will also install charging stations for electric vehicles on each bus, and conduct training programs to “support this new technology”, the ISBE stated.

Through the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Duty Grant Program, these districts will be receiving electric school buses and charging infrastructure as well as workforce training. This program reduces harmful emissions and improves air quality. We’re creating healthier, cleaner environments across the state thanks to our federal partners and local partners.

Tony Sanders, State Superintendent of Public Education, said that clean transportation solutions create a healthier environment for students and teachers. They also help save money for school districts and the taxpayers. “I’m proud of my staff at the Illinois State Board of Education, for winning this grant. It is a valuable investment into Illinois’ future clean energy.”

Forest Park School district 91 will receive five new buses. Franklin Park School district 84 will receive three. Hazel Crest School district 152.5 will receive one. Joliet Township high school District 204 is expected to get ten. Lincolnshire-Prairie View CSD 165, Marengo Union elementary CSD 165, Township High District 113, Troy Community Consolidated Schools District 30-C, will be receiving 32 buses.

The board also stated that the grant money would fund two full-time ISBE staff who will work to “support grant execution” and “other initiatives green energy”,
