OMAHA, Neb. —In the wake of the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, possibly linked to a white supremacist, Nebraska State Sen. John McCollister accused his own Republican Party of enabling white supremacy.

His reaction to the deadly violence garnered thousands of re-tweets around the country.

In an interview Monday with KETV Newswatch 7, McCollister said most of the responses he’s received online are positive, while acknowledging some Republican leaders in Nebraska criticized his comments.

In a tweet Sunday night, the Omaha senator said:

“The Republican Party is enabling white supremacy in our country. As a lifelong Republican, it pains me to say this, but it’s the truth.”
