New York mayor closes shelters for asylum seekers amid rightward turn

Eric Adams plans to close 25 shelters over the next two months, including Floyd Bennett Field which has 2,000 residents.

Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, announced Tuesday that 25 additional shelters for asylum seekers would be closing within two months.

Adams has been taking a more right-wing stance, particularly on immigration. He has been close to Donald Trump’s incoming administration, who has plans to deport millions of undocumented migrants.

After 22 weeks of decline, the number of asylum seekers in shelters in cities has reached its lowest level in 17 months.

The Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, located at Floyd Bennett Field in New York, houses approximately 2,000 people. New York State pays for the housing costs. New York State will continue to reimburse New York City the costs of similar care at other migrant shelters in the city.

Officials from the city claim that the closures of the factories will save the city $2,3bn.

In a press release, Adams said, “Thanks for our smart management strategy, we have turned the corner. And this additional list of shelter closures that we are announcing is even more evidence that we manage this crisis better than anyone else in the country.”

We will continue to look for ways to reduce taxpayer spending and consolidate sites as we manage this response.

Many people have been divided over the decision to evict migrants. They say that the 30-day and 60-day notices given to those losing their housing are not enough for families in New York to find other resources.

Adams, elected as mayor in a Democratic-centrist campaign, has faced many controversy during his tenure. Many have criticized the mayor for his perceived drift to rightwing policies. There is speculation that Adams may be trying to gain Trump’s favor as he faces charges over allegations that he took bribes.

Legal Aid Society and Coalition for the Homeless released a joint press release in response to the Floyd Bennett Field Shelter closing.

The statement read: “We welcome this closure. We have advocated it for years because this location was never a safe place for families with young children. It raised safety concerns for the families. However, we also recognize the disruption this will cause to the families that we serve. They are looking for stability above all.”

We are monitoring closely these transfers and closures to ensure that new arrivals have access to shelters and protection against any possible federal immigration enforcement dragnets.

Shelters are being closed in Manhattan, Brooklyn Queens, and the Bronx. Additional closures are planned for New York State, including the cities of Albany, Buffalo and Rochester.
