NYC Will House Illegal Immigrants in a Shuttered Jail

The jail that closed in New York City in 2019 is now being used to house illegal immigrants who are coming from the south border.

The New York Post reports that the Lincoln Correctional Facility will be used to house asylum seekers. The 10,000-square-foot facility is not a jail and it’s meant to be an “pit stop” or a temporary shelter for illegal immigrants.

City Hall said that they were grateful for the state’s generosity in providing the space and for partnering with them to make it available as a temporary shelter for asylum seekers, as New York City continues its humanitarian crisis.

The representative said, “We have had more than 70,000 asylum-seekers come through our intake centers in the city since last spring.” “And yet, hundreds of asylum seekers arrive in New York City each day,” the representative added.

The representative told the outlet that “we continue to require additional financial and operation support from our partner.”

According to reports, hotels and other locations have “overflowed” with migrants since more than 70,000 arrived in the last year. Townhall reported that Democrat mayor Eric Adams said that the cost of caring for illegal immigrants would be billions.

Jamaal brown, a New York State Representative, announced on Tuesday that illegal immigrants deserve housing “worthy of dignity” and called for schools to provide temporary housing.

He wrote: “Our NY University communities can and must come together to make sure migrants are welcomed here.”
