SC Wilson’s office says rape allegations made by Mace were never sent to his office

Alan Wilson, the Attorney General of South Carolina, says that the cases of rape or voyeurism alleged by Congresswoman Nancy Mace on U.S. House Floor were never sent to his office. The office stated that a police report must be filed and investigated by the local police department before it can be referred to an attorney general or solicitor’s office.

Mace’s description of Wilson’s Office is also “categorically wrong,” the office said. Mace is either misrepresenting the role of attorney general or does not fully understand it, the office stated in a press release. At this time, we have not received any reports from law enforcement agencies or requests for help regarding these issues. The attorney general, and the members of his staff, had no involvement and knowledge of these accusations until Mace made her public statements. Mace said that she had uncovered evidence, including photos and videos taken without consent of women, girls underage, and young women, as well as a video showing a woman unconscious being raped and filmed naked. She claimed that four men shared the videos, including her ex-fiance. Mace stated that Wilson did not indict the men despite the evidence presented. She also claimed that the investigation had been delayed. Wilson’s office said Mace was given multiple chances to speak with Wilson about the issue, but never did. “Congresswoman Mace has attended multiple events with the Attorney General over the past six months. The attorney general’s statement said that she also had the personal cell phone number of the attorney general. “She has never contacted him or approached him about any of her concerns.”

In a statement, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division stated that it had opened an investigation on Dec. 14, 2020, following contact from the United States Capitol Police. SLED said that the subject of the investigation was Patrick Bryant. He is Mace’s former fiance. SLED stated in a press release that since that time, they have conducted numerous interviews, executed multiple search warrants, and have a case file with all the documentation that will be released upon conclusion of the case. This active and ongoing investigation has been complex and involved several lawyers. Mace, in her speech, accused state officials of failing to act on evidence that she had provided. Wilson’s office said that as chief prosecutor, the attorney general directs anyone with evidence to give it to the relevant law enforcement agency which will be responsible for investigating the crime. Both Mace, and Wilson, are considering running for governor. Mace has also been criticizing Wilson and claiming that he did not perform well as Attorney General in recent weeks. Wilson’s office stated that it is obvious that Wilson built his career by protecting the most vulnerable people in our state. Any statement to the contrary is false and political motivated.
