Stacey Abrams, Brian Kemp clash in first debate

The fire alarm was a surprise, but otherwise Tuesday’s debate between Georgia gubernatorial candidates involved familiar themes in the fiercely contested race.

Democrat Stacey Abrams and Brian Kemp (who were joined by Libertarian Ted Metz) clashed early and often during the event, part of the Atlanta Press Club’s Loudermilk Young Debate Series. Facing off in their first televised matchup, they sparred over healthcare, immigration, voting rights and their own messy personal finances.

Abrams hit Kemp repeatedly over voting, an issue that’s attracted national attention.

“The right to vote is a right. My father was arrested helping people to register,” she said.
