The Texas Senate Race Is Too Close for Ted Cruz’s Comfort

Election Day is just 49 days away. We think it’s appropriate that we link to the Constitution Day text in our introduction.

Get Up to Speed

Former President Donald Trump blamed Vice President Kamala Harris directly for the attempted assassination of his life over the weekend. He said that the rhetoric, lies, exemplified in the false statements made during the rigged ABC Debate by Comrade Kamala Harris, and the ridiculous lawsuits designed to cause damage to Joe’s and Kamala’s political opponent, ME, have taken politics in the United States to a new level of hatred, abuse, and distrust. During the debate last week, Trump said that the bullets were flying because of the Communist Left Rhetoric. It will only get worse! “This one weaponized.” “Not me,” he replied. “She weaponized. “I probably got a bullet in the head due to what they said about me.”

According to a Justice Department announcement on Monday, Ryan Wesley Routh is accused of possessing a gun as a felon, and of receiving a weapon with a obliterated number. Routh was caught on Saturday after he waited for about 12 hours near the golf club Trump visited. Secret Service officials said that Routh never had Trump directly in his line-of-sight nor did he fire his weapon towards the former president.

Harris received good news in Pennsylvania. A USA Today survey conducted after the debate last week showed that she was leading Trump by 49 percent to 46 per cent among likely voters. Harris’ lead may be within the margin of error (4.4%), but it is the first poll that has been conducted in Pennsylvania since Trump and Harris squared off on Tuesday. Harris led Trump by 5 and 4 points respectively in Northampton County and Erie, two bellwether counties.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided Monday that independent presidential nominee Cornel West would not appear on ballots, which is a great boon for Democrats. West’s appearance on the ballot may have drawn votes from Harris in favor of Trump and away from progressives, which is likely why Democrats challenged West’s candidacy. West was helped to gain ballot access by several GOP-connected lawyers, operatives and others. This included Pennsylvania.

The Associated Press reported on Monday that a group called Patriots Run Project, which has ties with Democratic political operatives, recruited right-wingers, all of whom were disabled, retired, or disabled retirees to run independent campaigns in competitive House district, potentially stealing votes from Republican candidates. The group has been involved in at least six elections, including two in Iowa, one in Nebraska, Montana and Virginia, as well as Minnesota. Although it’s unclear who’s overseeing this effort, the company that collected signatures for at least three races is closely associated with a Democratic Consulting firm called Sole Strategies. In a third case, a firm called Dynata reportedly conducted a survey for one of the recruits. A spokeswoman informed AP that Patinkin Research was the sponsor, but later admitted to the outlet that she had misidentified the customer.

Ted Cruz finds himself in another close Senate battle

Just after 4 a.m. On September 14, Donald Trump’s campaign manager Chris LaCivita took to X and warned that Ted Cruz was in danger of losing a race he could win.

What the hell is going on with the Senate race here in Texas? I think i’m right… and i think i recognize his name… it’s time to bring in some professionals to save @tedcruz. LaCivita then tweeted that Cruz should “fire Axiom”, the consulting firm headed by Jeff Roe who was a longtime Cruz advisor, as well as a chief strategist of the super PAC supporting Florida Governor. Ron DeSantis is challenging Trump in the Republican Primary. LaCivita cited a poll conducted by Texas Public Opinion Research, which showed that Cruz was only 4 points ahead of Democratic Rep. Colin Allred among registered voters. This poll was followed by another conducted earlier in the month by Morning Consult, which showed Cruz ahead of Allred among likely voters by just 4 points.

Is it that close? Is it just the latest scuffle between two Republican strategists or is this a bad moment in their rivalry? Or another entry in the Texas-is-turning-blue narrative that’s a favorite of political journalists? Who knows?

Cruz defeated Beto O’Rourke in 2018 by just 214,921 out of 8,3 million votes cast – 50.9 to 48.3 – so a close race isn’t unheard of. Cruz, who went from being Trump’s most ardent critic to his most shameless ally (at least publicly), is now campaigning as if his career depended on it. Liz Cheney, a former Republican Rep., cited Cruz’s relationship to Trump and his willingness do anything for him as the reason she made the trip to Dallas to support Allred.

In a discussion moderated by Dr. Kneeland-Youngblood, which lasted about an hour and a half, Cheney delivered a harsh critique of Cruz — one that was far more brutal than the assessment given by his actual rival in the race.

Cheney said that during their time in the House of Representatives, she had come to admire and respect Allred for his work on energy issues. Allred returned the compliment by telling the audience that watching her in Republican leadership had made him wish she was a Democrat.

Cheney explained why she supported Kamala Harris, rather than Trump, in spite of many significant policy differences. She then focused on Cruz.

“I’ve been friends with Ted Cruz for twenty years.” It’s clear that everyone who knows Ted Cruz – and I’m certain most of you here know Ted Cruz – thinks Ted Cruz’s a man with great honor, Cheney said to loud laughter. “What Ted Cruz has done after the 2020 election renders him unfit to hold office.” Ted Cruz knew it was unconstitutional. He also knew that Joe Biden won the election. The election was certified in all of our states. There were no contested elector slates. Ted Cruz then put into place a plan to reject these votes. This would have meant overturning the results of the election. And he did it to please Donald Trump.”

Cheney stated that she would not support Cruz for these reasons even if Allred was unknown to her. “But knowing the Texas people have an excellent alternative, and knowing the type of public servant now holding that Senate seat in Texas, it wasn’t a close call.”
