Top Democrat Official in Michigan Battleground County Refuses to Back Biden
The top Democrat official of a Michigan battleground county will not support President Joe Biden in this election cycle. This highlights Biden’s lack of enthusiasm within his own party, less than six months from the election.
Mark Hackel, the Macomb County Executive (D), told Detroit News columnist Noal finley on Monday that he did not intend to vote in this year’s presidential election due to his dislike for former President Donald Trump and Biden.
He said, “I’m disappointed that I don’t want to vote for the president.” “I dislike both of them.” They only talk negatively about each other and not about their own ideas or themselves.
“I’m not going to work for him.” I’ll let Macomb decide for themselves. “I’m not going to vote for someone just because they are a political party,” he said.
Adolph Mongo, a Democrat consultant, told Finley Hackel’s choice “hurts Biden”. He added that “Democrats would have to spend a lot of resources” on Macomb County. Hackel’s moderate tendencies were also cited as the reason for Finley’s lack of support for Biden and Trump.
Macomb County is located in the southeast of Michigan. It has a population of close to 900,000. Macomb County played an important role in recent elections. In three of the four last presidential elections, the presidential candidate who won the county went on to win both the state and White House.
According to The New York Times, Trump won Macomb County by double-digits in 2016, after Barack Obama had won it by 8.6 percent in 2008 and by 4 percent in 2012. In 2020, Trump won the county with eight points but Biden won the state and the electoral college.
Hackel’s rejection comes at a time when the president is having problems with Democrat votes in Michigan and elsewhere. Listen to Michigan was the first campaign to launch the anti-Biden, “uncommitted”, movement. This has seen over 500,000 Democratic primary vote protesters across the country with “uncommitted votes” to protest Biden’s handling the Israel-Hamas conflict. This movement is made up of Muslims, Arab Americans, young voters and progressives on the far left.
The group exceeded its goal of accumulating 10,000 “uncommitted”, protest votes during the Michigan primary by accumulating more than 100,000. These uncommitted Michigan voters and those in other swing states such as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania could stay home during the general election and pose a serious liability for Biden’s reelection.
The 101,430 votes that are still uncommitted in Michigan is similar to the 154.188 votes between Trump and Biden’s margin in 2020.
The Star-Tribune reported that as the primary election season winds down, and the general elections are ramping up in Michigan and other swing states, a Muslim activist organization called Abandon Biden has organized operations to prevent Biden’s re-election.
Maya Rao, a reporter for the outlet, reported that “the group’s leaders claim they want to punish the president politically for what they call enabling mass casualties of civilians in Gaza.”
