Poll: Nearly 50% of California Voters Considering Voting for Republican Gov.

California Voters Considering Republican Leadership in 2026

Recent polling data indicates a significant shift in voter sentiment in California, with nearly half of the likely voters expressing openness to electing a Republican governor in the 2026 elections. According to a survey conducted by 790 KABC radio between March 6-9, 48 percent of respondents stated they would “consider” voting for a Republican candidate for governor.

Public Concerns Highlighted in Poll

The poll, executed by national pollster David Wolfson, also shed light on several critical issues concerning Californians:

  • 83 percent of voters are unhappy with the high gas prices in the state.
  • A substantial 73 percent support the full funding of anti-crime Proposition 36, which has been neglected by State Democrat Leaders.
  • 72 percent believe homelessness remains a significant issue after years of Democrat dominance in Sacramento.
  • 71 percent are dissatisfied with the Democratic leadership’s handling of the state’s high cost of living.
  • 69 percent feel that Democrats have not adequately addressed the high costs of energy and utilities.
  • 62 percent are in favor of a “full independent investigation” into the recent Los Angeles Wildfires.
  • Only 24 percent of Californians support allowing biological males who identify as transgender to compete in female sports.

Democratic Contenders for Governor

Despite the growing consideration for Republican candidates, the Democratic field is also shaping up. Former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently leading among Democrat contenders to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, with 57 percent of Democrat primary voters backing her potential run, as reported by Breitbart News’s Simon Kent. Additionally, former Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) has entered the race, emphasizing the need for “hope and a whole lot of grit, fresh blood and new ideas,” as per NBC News.

This polling data suggests a potential shift in the political landscape of California, with significant public discontent towards the current Democratic leadership’s handling of key state issues. As the 2026 gubernatorial race approaches, it remains to be seen how these sentiments will translate into electoral outcomes.
