STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — Drivers aren’t the only ones who could be fined for texting or talking.

Now, there’s a proposal to keep pedestrians safe that could set off a national trend.

Crossing busy Broad Street in downtown Stamford can be a challenge, even if you’re not staring down at text messages on your cell phone.

“I see mothers pushing their babies, they’re texting and I’m like how do y’all do all this at this intersection? That scares me,” Dawn Thompson said.

I am an old school telephone man, I remember when all phones were land lines, when phones didn’t have a dial, when dial phones were first introduced. Times were simpler then, there were answering services for doctors and other professionals, Then came pagers. Now people panic if their phone isn’t with them or if the battery dies! I came from California, I watched as they outlawed cell phone use while driving unless it was hands free! I saw people so engrossed in texting and walking that they step out into the street in front of a bus or garbage truck. I read the story of a girl graduating from high school, she was texting her grandmother, her grandmother was reading the text and walked into the street in front of a garbage truck and was killed! when they picked up the grandmother’s phone the grand daughter’s text was still on the screen! Grandma is deceased and the grand daughter will have to live with the fact she lost her grand mother because of her text!

Next week there will be bill to take our phones away from us. We will be ordered to keep them in our house or lose them. We have terrorists running around, people rioting, statues being torn down, so now we worry about phones.

I don’t mean to be cruel but how come we work so hard to protect people instead of educating people? This sounds like an OSHA problem. We make sure NO ONE is hurt just to be kind to them but now they don’t know why they were hurt.
We are human beings and if we don’t see pain we don’t stay away from what makes pain. How many parents tell their children to not touch a burner on the stove from age 1 to10 to protect them. How many children have touched a burner? I did and my children did. How many time? Once, right?
EDUCATE people and stop just protecting them. If there is a rash of people that won’t learn then they will feel pain. Pain can be good if it educates one to not repeat.

I agree with what you have to say about the people who are actually doing the texting, but like drunk driving accidents, often times the innocent person is the victim and not the violator. We are trying to protect the victims, not the perpetrators. I cannot tell you how many times in recent months I have had people who are texting walk right into me. I, stupidly, used to see them coming and swerve and walk out of their way and then I said “Why am I the one who has to alter my course?” I now keep steady and let them walk right into me. Not one of them has attempted to pick an argument and all have apologized and hopefully they have learned a lesson. Perhaps they realize that the next person they walk into will be the unhinged nut who decks them. BTW, the same tactic works in supermarkets with shopping carts. It is amazing how many shoppers think the entire aisle is theirs and they can travel nilly-willy on both sides. Go down the aisles like it is a car on the road. When I see someone coming at me down the wrong side of the aisle, I simply stop my cart and have THEM maneuver around me. Why should I have to try to navigate a loaded down shopping cart because of someone else’s selfishness? Some people are of the mind that you can’t change stupid. Perhaps not, but I do believe we can recondition the rude and/or clueless self-absorbed individuals
