Kamala Harris Signs Pop Up in ‘Fortnite’ as Candidates Chase the Gamer Vote

As of Monday, fans of the popular videogame Fortnite will be able to enter Freedom Town, USA created by Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

There are signs in Freedom Town for Harris’s running mate Tim Walz. The players can take advantage of tax breaks for small businesses, collect building supplies, and build new houses to reduce housing costs. The players can also fire explosive footballs in the direction of their opponents. This is a nod to Walz’s days as a high-school coach.

Candidates are battling it out to win over young voters with video games. Harris is focusing on this issue in particular because recent polls show that younger male voters and Black men are more likely than ever to vote for Republicans or former President Donald Trump.

The Trump campaign made its own pitch for gamers. Adin Ross was on a livestream in August with the former president. Adin became famous for playing Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s NBA 2K, Grand Theft Auto, and other games. Ross broadcasts his livestreams through Kick.com which is owned by Stake, the Australian crypto casino. According to Kick, 564,000 people watched the livestream, but analysts question whether Kick’s statistics are accurate.

Trump addressed the economy and immigration. A former Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to a comment request.

Walz played Madden NFL 25 with Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez from New York on the streaming platform Twitch.

While playing, the two discussed a variety of political issues from the housing assistance program for first-time buyers to the position taken by the Biden administration on the Gaza war. Walz waxed a nostalgic note for Sega’s 25-year old Dreamcast console.

Last week, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders appeared on Twitch with video game influencers to promote the Harris Campaign. The livestream was viewed more than one million times on YouTube and Twitch after the event.

Harris’ YouTube Channel released a Freedom Town trailer on Monday, accompanied by a song by rapper Megan Thee Stallion. The campaign also works with gaming influencers such as Jordan “HusKerrs”, Morgan “Modelmorg”, and Jordan “HusKerrs”.

Freedom Town was not designed by Epic. Epic provides tools for developers to create their own “maps” in the game.

Freedom Town, which had less than 150 players active as of Monday midday, will be able to tell if Harris’s gamble pays off.
