House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to President Biden’s proposal for term limits on the Supreme Court as “absurd”.

Louisiana Republican has pushed back against changes to the Supreme Court following reports that Biden would push for the limitation of the length of time a justice can serve as well as the imposition an ethics code.

“It’s absurd. They first claim they want to increase the number of judges when things do not go their way. They wanted to impeach some of them. He wants to limit the number of terms. “It’s absurd,” said Mr. Johnson to Fox Business.

“That wouldn’t pass through Congress. By the way, the Constitution says that they can serve for life on the basis of their good conduct. We would then have to change the entire tradition of the court and its organization.

The Washington Post reported this week that the president intends to endorse legislation regarding term limits and an ethics code. According to the outlet, he could also push for constitutional amendments that would remove broad immunity from presidents.

The proposals come after the end of the 2023-24 term for the Supreme Court Justices, which culminated this month. Former President Donald Trump won major victories including the rejection of state challenges to remove his name from 2024 ballots and some protection against criminal prosecution.

The rulings angered liberals who saw that the opinions of a conservative Supreme Court with a majority of 6-3 were cemented by President Trump’s three appointments — Justices Neil M. Gorsuch Brett M. Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Democrats have also criticised Justices Clarence Thomas Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. by suggesting that they should be recused from cases relating to the 2020 elections.

Liberals claim that the justices have conflicts of interest because Justice Thomas’s wife attended the rally in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and Justice Alito’s wife displayed flags at their homes to support the “Stop the Steal Movement”.

The two justices rebuffed calls for recusal, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (a New York Democrat) introduced articles of impeachment this month against them.

According to the Constitution, a judge appointed by the President and confirmed by Senate may serve for life, subject to impeachment.
