Without Obama, once-booming gun industry poised to shrink

April 1, 2017

President Trump’s election appears to be negatively affecting gun sales in the U.S. and the bubble appears to be bursting despite a staunch advocate for gun rights in the White House and Republicans ruling Congress.

“President Obama was the best gun salesman the world has ever seen,” Karl Sorken, a production manager at Battle Rifle Co. in Houston. Sorken is an Army veteran and self-described liberal who voted for Obama and notes the change for the industry under Trump is a topic of conversation in the shop.

Fears of government limits on guns — some real, some perceived — led to a surge in demand during Obama’s tenure and manufacturers leapt to keep up. Over the decade ending in 2015, the number of U.S. companies licensed to make firearms jumped 362 percent.

“The trends really almost since Election Day or election night have been that gun sales have slacked off,” said Robert Spitzer, political science department chairman at State University of New York at Cortland. “When you take away Barack Obama and you give the Republicans control of both houses of Congress, which is extremely friendly to the gun lobby, then the political pressure subsides. And that surely is at least a key part of the explanation for the drop-off in sales.”

The Washington Post reported that the FBI conducted about 500,000 fewer background checks in December 2016 then in 2015. Gun sales this year have reportedly dropped about 17 percent.

The republicans do not rule congress or anything else. I suppose you haven’t seen the latest news about 6 republicans who have been taking money from Soros. Check it out. We the people are sitting around thinking the politicians will straighten things out. They will not. Wake up.

What has blinded your God common sense? I can see arguing with you, who apparently has renounced the use of God common sense….Is like ministering medicine to a dead person! You Democrats/Liberals have no clue the repercussions you have leshed on this Nation! It is going to take @ least 10 years, to clean out the embedded “Stench” from this past Adminstration.

What an idiotic statement to make…That Obama drove the gun sales! First off let us not give him, the tyrant any credit for the evil he has done and #2.) It was your fear tactics that drove the sale of guns! Give me a break!

    1. bobnstuff says:

Explain then why sales are down, fear hasn’t gone down with a President telling everyone how bad crime is, even when he’s wrong about his numbers. It was the NRA pushing the fear of your guns being taken away the created the market. People were hording. Now the only groups buying guns are blacks and women. I guess they have good rights to be afraid in Trumps world.

      1. Retired says:

Here you go again with more Bullshitsky , guns are not like cars that are useless after about 10 -20 years. You can only saturate the public so much . More woman bought guns then Men during Obama Most of the new are not liked as much as the old , plus the Boomers are dying off leaving guns to family members .

        1. bobnstuff says:

Do you EVER check your facts? Once again you are talking out your backside. Now that we have the a white man in the White House all those read necks can stop buying guns. And yes I know guns don’t wear out like cars. I don’t own anything newer the WW II.

          1. Retired says:

I get my facts from the stores that sell , 2 are major chains and 2 are local stores plus the gun shows I attend and not the media rags that you sold your soul to . Most expected the sales to go down after the high volume of sales . A lot of the volume sale had to do with states passing conceal carry .

          2. bobnstuff says:

In other words you have no real facts at all.
Women are a bigger part of the business today but men still make up the greater part of the gun crowd.
If you live in the south you will see a larger number of women buying guns. It’s not a nation wide trend though.

          3. Retired says:

I gave you facts of life . You always put out the opposite of what is in real life .In our family all women have guns and permits, plus we are spread nation wide. You evidently don’t leave your area and depend on what some are posting on the sites you visit . Did you ever hear of if it is not political correct it does not get printed . Have you ever left your state cave ???

          4. bobnstuff says:

I guess you don’t read anything. The magazines like Guns and Ammo and Field and Stream have been writing about the fulling numbers of gun ownership. It’s only been the fear of having guns taken away that has been keeping sales up. Now they are pushing lies about the crime rate to scare women into buying guns. As you have pointed out guns don’t really wear out and that creates a problem for the manufactures. Add in the fact that hunting is on the decline and the youth of today would rather play video games the go out shooting real guns. If I only went by my local gun stores I would say there were few gun sales since the shop I’ve been going to closed up and the other local shop isn’t doing all that well.

          5. Retired says:

Did you ever check who owns the magazines and the back ground people involved??? I have read the same about more interest in electronics . Can’t help it you live in a AFU state . What you forget is locals are shutting down shooting ranges .I know of three that have been there for decades . As land is developed and people move in they don’t want them in the neighborhood. There was one that wanted to develop a indoor range and the county would not give a permit because of houses near by , like a quarter mile away . Hunting is down due to land available as land owners lease land for thousands of Dollars for acres , usually in tracks of 40-80 acres . This goes on in your state as well .

          6. bobnstuff says:

Our gun clubs are having no problems altough there membership is getting older each year. As far as the gun shops it’s just the not enough people buying guns to pay the rent. As far as Field & Stream and Guns & Ammo both are pro 2nd amendment. They just report the true facts. Sorry if they don’t agree with you misconceptions. Hunting is down because the older hunters are dying and their children have no interest. I have five kids and only one shots. He doesn’t hunt though, he would rather go fishing. At least I know that there will be no fighting over who gets my guns.

          7. Retired says:

I get field and streams plus I also know what has happened in my and surrounding states as far as Hunting land available , the subject you ignored . Land leasing has killed a lot of places to hunt Plus the junger generation does not have the time off like we had in the past , it has also got more expensive and restrictive than in the past with new regs. .Many states only have short seasons for turkey – bear – deer .

          8. bobnstuff says:

We lost some land to the developers but there is still a lot of places around were I live. I can walk across the road and have about 1000 acres to hunt and unlike years ago I will be pretty much by myself. We used to have problem with hunters coming out from the city but not now. Gun bashes are still big around her but most of the people at them are over fifty. The numbers have been dropping for a long time and the only way for the gun manufacturers to stay in business is to sell more guns to the same customers. The sportsman market just isn’t what it used to be. Now you are left with the collectors and the folk that are scared. Women are their focus right now but how many are going to buy a gun and more important how many will buy more then one? You can expect to see a fall out of manufactures in the next few years. There are over 1000 licensed gun manufactures in the US, most are small specialty hand crafted rifles. The market is drying up for them. It will be interesting to see what happens but they need to get the fear factor going again if they want to stay in business. I’m not planning to go shopping for anything new, there are only two guns left that I want and nether are new. I still want a M1 Grand and a 12 gauge double barreled open hammer shot gun made in the US. Once I have those I’m done. I have a line on the 12 gauge but they still want to much money for it.
