Every morning children in school stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, which says “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.â€
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 54% believe that the U.S. is indeed the nation with liberty and justice for all. A third (34%) disagree while 11% are not sure.
However, only 38% of African-Americans believe the nation is a land of liberty and justice for all. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of white adults hold that view. So do 71% of Republicans, 45% of Democrats and 48% of those unaffiiated with either major party.
The survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on June 30-July 1, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Despite challenges ranging from the oil spill to the economy, 76% say that if they could live anywhere in the world, they would live in the United States. Â However, that figure is down six points from a year ago.
Fourteen percent (14%) would rather live somewhere else, and 9% aren’t sure where they’d reside.
Adults over 40 overwhelmingly pick the U.S. as their home country than younger adults. There is no significant difference among party lines—more than 70% of Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated adults would rather live in the U.S. than anywhere else.
