Born-Alive Act: Pelosi, Schumer melt down after new bill requires care for babies born during failed abortion

Senior Democratic lawmakers took to Twitter to criticize Republicans who supported the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. This law requires doctors to care for babies born alive following a failed abortion.

Among those who responded were former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Pelosi tweeted Wednesday, “Today, rather than joining Democrats to condemn political violence, [House Republicans] chose push their extreme antichoice agenda,”

She said, “Democrats believe that everyone should have access to reproductive health services, without fear of violence or intimidation.”

Pelosi, who resigned from the Democratic leadership in 2022 after Republicans regained the majority, repeated her comments in a second tweet.

She stated that Democrats will continue to defend reproductive freedoms against extremist Republicans who disregard a woman’s right to choose the size of her family and when it should be done. These are personal, serious decisions that women must make guided by their faith, doctor, and family, not politicians.

Schumer, a senator who didn’t vote on the bill, replied similarly.

“The MAGA Republican-controlled House is putting on display their extreme views on women’s health with legislation that does not even have the support of the American people,” he wrote.

She also voiced her opinion to the vice president

Harris tweeted, “House Republicans passed today an extreme bill that will further jeopardize our right to reproductive health care within our country.” “This is yet more attempt by Republican legislators control women’s bodies.”

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act states that any infant born alive after an abortion attempt, or that survives it, is a “legal persons for all purposes under the laws in the United States.”

Healthcare workers and doctors would need to keep the child alive. A child born in an abortion clinic without adequate care facilities would have to be transported to a hospital.

Doctors and nurses cannot refuse to provide care to patients.

On Wednesday, almost every Democrat in the House voted against legislation that passed 220-210.

Democrats received all the “no” votes. They claim that the bill could further harm children and make medical decisions more complicated.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (a Texas Democrat) voted in favor of the bill while Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (also from Texas) voted “present.”

The remarks of Harris, Schumer and Pelosi were also echoed by other Democratic leaders in the chamber, who criticised Republicans for their “extreme” positions.

Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), House Minority Leader, tweeted: “We will always defend women’s freedom to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions.”

Minority House Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) said that the “extreme bill” was similar to “assaulting reproduction justice.”

She wrote that the extreme @HouseGOP had made attacking reproductive justice the centerpiece of its agenda, instead of building on the nation’s history of progress, standing for equality and defending freedom.

To show their collective resistance to the anti-abortion agenda of extreme MAGA Republicans, the Democratic Women’s Caucus wore white as well.

Republicans took a different tone, claiming that Democrats held an “extreme” view of the bill after they opposed it. The bill would have allowed the live-born child to be kept alive and receive normalized medical care.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), a candidate for House Speaker, added many “mind-blown” emojis to a tweet in which he stated that Democrats opposed the Born Alive Act.

Later, he criticised Democrats for voting against a bill condemning attacks on pregnant centers across the nation.

He stated, “Democrats’ position regarding abortion is so extreme, that 209 members voted AGAINST an House Resolution condemning recent attacks on prolife facilities, groups and churches. Shameful.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) added that “Tonight, we voted on The Born Alive Act. It is utterly uncontroversial for every normal person, but a hard NO from almost every Democrat in Congress. That’s crazy.”

“The Democrats are too extreme on this matter and not in line with the American people,” he said. He also stated that he did not agree with his statement. “The Born Alive Act protects baby born alive following an attempted abortion.”

“This means that health care workers must provide survivors with the same medical care as other babies to save the child’s lives.”

According to the Texas Republican, it should be simple: They have the right to live.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Col.) similarly called the Democratic position “sick” and “radical.”

The Born Alive Act will not be approved by the Senate where Democrats hold a majority.
