New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), has stated that local officials will coordinate raids with ICE, but did not elaborate how he would react to Trump’s new policy allowing agents to conduct raids on churches and schools. Adams met with Trump, attended Trump’s inaugural and is pursuing a pardon for federal corruption charges relating to alleged dealings between the Turkish government and Adams.
Federal agents deport and detain hundreds of illegal immigrants every day, initially focusing on violent criminals. ICE reported Monday night that it had made almost 1,200 arrests, and 879 detainers, a slight rise from the previous day.
On the first day of Trump’s administration, he declared illegal immigration to be a national crisis and authorized mass deportations. Trump has also declared drug cartels to be foreign terrorist organisations and reinstated the “remain in Mexico policy” which requires asylum seekers waiting south of border while their cases is pending.
The majority of Americans support Trump’s promise to deport millions of illegal immigrants. Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of deporting criminals and illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. during former president Joe Biden’s tenure.
