The airwaves in Michigan will soon be thick with political ads as a number of “super PACs†and at least one presidential campaign went on a buying spree Tuesday, nailing down what commercial time they could ahead of the state’s primary next Tuesday.
Making its first major ad buy this year, the super PAC supporting President Obama, Priorities USA Action, has secured $238,000 worth of air time in the Detroit and Flint markets, according to a group that tracks political media spending. Priorities USA Action did not immediately release a commercial or respond to a request for comment.
Michigan is one the swing states that the president and his advisers believe he stands a solid chance of winning. Mr. Obama’s plans to revive the country’s manufacturing base could help him with blue-collar voters there. And the state has been showing signs of economic resurgence as the auto industry adds more jobs. Mr. Obama has stood behind his backing for the federal government’s $80 billion assistance package to American auto makers, whileMitt Romney and other Republican presidential candidates have criticized it as an example of government overreach.
Mr. Obama and his Democratic allies like Priorities USA Action are seeking to highlight the differences between the president’s economic agenda and Mr. Romney’s, which will get a full airing on Friday when Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, delivers a major speech in downtown Detroit, where he is expected to unveil a new tax plan.
Republicans are adding to their efforts in Michigan. The super PAC supporting Rick Santorum, the Red, White and Blue Fund, has put almost $700,000 into advertising in the state so far and bought another $600,000 in air time on Tuesday.
Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney super PAC, added $400,000 to its spending, bringing its total there to $2.2 million.
