Republican lawmaker calls for FBI to investigate ActBlue over ‘alarming’ allegations

Arizona GOP Representative Andy Biggs has called on FBI Director Kash Patel to initiate an investigation into the Democrat fundraising platform ActBlue, citing potential violations of federal campaign finance laws. This request was made public on Thursday, following concerns that the platform might be misused for illicit foreign interference in U.S. elections.
The call for investigation was bolstered by actions from House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, who on Monday sought access to Suspicious Activity Reports related to ActBlue from the Treasury Department. They argued that the Biden administration had not fulfilled their earlier requests for this information.
In his communication to Director Patel, Biggs highlighted that in 2024, “President Biden’s Treasury Department identified hundreds of suspicious transactions involving ActBlue, as reported by banks.” He noted that while the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on House Administration are probing these allegations, the previous administration hindered their access to crucial documents.
Biggs also raised alarms about the potential for foreign interference through the platform’s verification processes, which might allow individuals from nations such as China, Russia, Venezuela, and Iran to make straw donations, thus illegally influencing U.S. elections. This concern was reported by Fox News.

He stressed the severity of these allegations in his letter, stating, “should these allegations prove true, they would pose a serious threat to the integrity of our elections and result in the victimization of American citizens.” Biggs urged the FBI to conduct a “thorough and vigorous investigation” into ActBlue to address these significant concerns.
The scrutiny of ActBlue isn’t new. Congress, along with numerous state attorneys general, started investigating the platform in the last election cycle. They pointed out that ActBlue had only recently begun implementing security measures like requiring the CVV number from the back of credit cards to verify donor identities. There have also been accusations of fraud and money laundering associated with the platform.
ActBlue has been a significant player in political fundraising, claiming to have raised $2 billion for Democrats and liberal causes over the past two decades.
