Tim Walz’s wife argues putting tampons in all school bathrooms part of helping kids learn to read
Gwen Walz said that offering tampons to students in the bathrooms of schools would help them learn how to read. She made this comment during an interview with Katie Couric on Sunday.
Couric asked Walz if her husband was called “Tampon Tim,” which is a conservative nickname for him after he passed a law in his state requiring free menstrual product in all restrooms in schools, including the boys’ room.
Walz stated that “if kids are hungry at school, it will affect their brains and learning. You won’t learn to read.” If you want to learn to read and close gaps, you need remove the barriers. If it’s tampons then, yes, that is tampons.
She said, “Let’s remove the barriers, and get on with the real work, and not get distracted by what people call components, or, as others would say, a level playing field, or whatever else it may be,”
According to the legislation, menstrual products must be made available in the restrooms that are regularly used by all students from grades 4-12.
Walz stated that “Tim and myself have always been interested in removing barriers for learning and success. Whether it is a free lunch, menstruation products, or even knowing who you are, we believe everyone should be included and certain things may look different to some people.” “People are different and have different resources. But everyone is everyone.”
“It’s not a smooth journey. But we looked at it from the perspective of, ‘What are you looking for to get ahead, what are you looking for to be healthy, happy, and successful? How can we help you most effectively, and best, and then just mind your own business, right?” “” She continued. “Get out of the way because I think these two things probably describe Tim. He is compassionate, he is empathetic and he removes obstacles.
Walz added that “schools should provide what we need.”
“He does an excellent job at that. But I think, you also know, he says, ‘Whose problem is that?’ Now I have to put quarters in the swear-jar, but mind it yourselves, because, lets just get to the important issues we need to solve and not get distracted by people’s personal affairs.”
She added, “We view equity as giving people the tools they need to reach a place where we can hold that conversation.”
Walz discussed the advice of second gentleman Doug Emhoff and his support for her.
She said, “He’s an amazing man and the way he supports his wife, empowers women and empowers myself is truly miraculous.” “So, he’s got a sense of humor, I guess.”
The Daily Mail reported that Emhoff was accused of slapping an ex-girlfriend so hard that she spun after flirting with a valet, and engaging in “inappropriate”, “misogynistic”, and “inappropriate office behavior” at his Los Angeles firm.
According to the Daily Mail, Emhoff’s marriage ended after he had an affair with a nanny who looked after their children. He got her pregnant. According to the Daily Mail, the nanny’s friend confirmed that the nanny did not keep her baby but gave no further details.
