A group of Hispanic Democrats from Connecticut introduced a bill to eliminate the term “Latinx”, which is used in state communications.

Five Democratic members of Arkansas’ House of Representatives authored the bill, all of them of Hispanic descent. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ decision to ban the term “Latinx” from state government was at least partially responsible for the inspiration of the bill. This move was also met with widespread disapproval among Latinos.

The bill’s text is:

[T]he general laws [shall] be changed to prohibit any state agency or employee for a state agency from using the term “Latinx” on official communications or forms.

It was introduced by five state House members: Geraldo C. Reyes (state representative), Christopher Rosario (state rep), Juan R. Candelaria (state rep), Robert Sanchez, Minnie Gonzalez.

Reyes called the term “Latinx” a “woke term” that offends the Constitution State’s large Hispanic population. According to the Census Bureau, 17.7% of residents in the Constitution State are Hispanic. Reyes stated to the Associated Press that he is of Puerto Rican heritage and finds it offensive. “The Spanish language is centuries-old and defaults to Latino for everyone. It’s all-inclusive. They didn’t have to invent a word; it was already there.”

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders banned this word from state documents in January. Her order stated that all state offices, departments, or agencies must review the official documents of their respective entities about the use of the term “Latinx”, “Latinx,” or “Latinxs” in state documents, unless the Governor grants an exemption. It ordered agencies to identify any instances of the term within state documents and replace them all with a form of “Hispanic”, “Latino”, or “Latina” within 60 days.

“This has been offensive to all Puerto Ricans and it’s something which hasn’t stood well with many people here for quite a while.” Reyes stated to CT Insider. “When I learned that Arkansas Gov. It was banned by Sanders on her first day at the office. I saw it as an opportunity for myself to do the same thing.” Reyes criticized Sanders’ decision, saying that she had “other motives” for banning the word from Arkansas government documents.

A state website search reveals that at most 920 documents in the state contain the word “Latinx”.

In October, a national poll found that only 1% identified as Latinx. This is a gender-neutral term left-wing culture has imposed upon Hispanics. WPA Intelligence, a conservative firm that polled 1,288 Hispanic voters registered as Democrat, Republican and Independent, collaborated with Visto media for the Latino advocacy group Bienvenido.

According to the poll, most people prefer to identify themselves as Hispanic. Others preferred American or Latino.

The poll asked respondents to select from a variety of reasons why Hispanics don’t embrace the term. A total of 35% of Democrats blamed Hispanics for rejecting the invented term on “machismo Culture” or “too many homophobias and transphobias among Hispanics.”

Democrats also believe that the term is not being used in Hispanic culture because of “right-wing disinformation” and simply because Hispanics are proud of their culture. About 14%, however, don’t know what it means.

However, the majority of Republicans believe it’s because Hispanics love their culture.
