LGBTQI+ Advocates Cheer as Federal Judge Overturns Tennessee’s Ban on Drag Shows in Front of Kids
LGBTQI+ activists have applauded and cheered a federal judge’s decision that drag shows will continue in Tennessee, despite the state’s law prohibiting them.
In a 70-page ruling, U.S. district court judge Thomas Parker stated that “despite Tennessee’s compelling interest to protect the psychological and physical well-being of children”, the law known by the name Adult Entertainment Act was an “unconstitutional restraint on freedom of speech.”
Parker also stated that the law is “unconstitutionally broad and substantially vague” and encourages “discriminatory application.”
The law would have prohibited adult cabaret shows on public property, or in any place where minors could be present. The law would have prohibited adult cabaret performances on public property or anywhere minors might be present.
Breitbart News reported that Tennessee lawmakers had passed the original legislation earlier this year.
The bill defines “male and woman impersonators” to be adult cabaret performers. It also bans “adult-oriented shows that are harmful for minors.”
Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the bill into law in early March. Bill Lee, the Republican Tennessee governor, signed this bill into law early in March.
