Ohio Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno has raised over $4 million in the third quarter, including $3 million of his own money.

The Republican announced that he also had approximately $5 million in cash.

Moreno is a wealthy, successful businessman who is running for a seat in the primary alongside Matt Dolan, State Senator and Secretary of State Frank LaRose. They want to unseat Democratic Sen. Sherrod, who is widely viewed as one of most vulnerable incumbents running for re-election in 2020.

Moreno is no stranger to self-funding: during his brief run for the Senate in 2022, he reported self-financing of more than $3,000,000. Self-funders who are willing and able to dip into their personal fortunes have been an important part of the GOP strategy to regain the Senate. Both Dolan, and Moreno are able to self-fund their campaigns in Ohio.

The former president Donald Trump has not endorsed Moreno in this race, but he has praised him. Trump stated in a post on social media earlier this year that Moreno would be “not easy to beat”. LaRose also hopes for a Trump support. Sen. J.D. Vance (R – Ohio), a close Trump ally has backed Moreno.

Other wealthy GOP Senate Candidates include Dave McCormick, Tim Sheehy and Jim Justice from West Virginia. The deadline for reporting fundraising for the third quarterly period, which runs from July 1 through September 30, is October 15. Moreno was one of the first Senate Republicans to disclose his total fundraising. He raised almost $2.3 million during the second quarter.
